Bistek ready for more'fabricated stories' and 'dirty tricks'

Bistek ready for more black prop

TEN days to go before the elections, Quezon City mayoral bet Herbert “Bistek” Bautista is expecting more black propaganda to come his way.

“I expect these fabricated stories to continue even after elections. They never get tired of making up fantastic stories against me, and they will never stop until they see me crushed and broken,” Bautista said.

He said his opponent is a promoter of “garbage politics” and in desperation paid people to spread lies and misinformation against him.

Bautista said the lies coming from the camp of Mike Defensor backfired and exposed the dirty tricks of the former MalacaƱang executive.

Last week, women’s partylist group Gabriela and Bayan Muna denied endorsing Defensor.

by JB Salarzon  (Abante Tonite) May 1, 2010 Saturday
My political rival has already resorted to character assassination.”

Celebrities seeking posts in the May 10 polls

Celebrities seeking posts in the May 10 polls

BRENDA BARRIENTOS, GMA News Research
Over a hundred celebrities are seeking national and local posts in the May polls, the most since the 2004 elections, data collected by GMA News Research said.

In the May 2010 elections, 16 out of 109 celebrities are running for national posts while the rest are seeking local positions, mostly seeking to be councilors, based on review of the official list of candidates nationwide, GMA News Research said.

This year’s celebrity candidates — including actors, singers, beauty titlists, news reporters, broadcasters or anchors, and sports figures — make up the longest list since the 2004 elections, based on data gathered by GMA News Research and an earlier study by the Institute for Popular Democracy.

The reason why celebrity candidates get elected is because of the frustration of the people.
– Teodoro

Many celebrities are seeking political positions owing to the "decline in the movie industry" and "public frustration," Prof. Luis Teodoro, former dean of the UP College of Mass Communication and director of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility, said.

“I think stars have limited options," he said. "There’s a decline in the movie industry so they go on TV or politics. Tingin nila kasi madali lang manalo dahil sa pangalan. On the psychological aspect, I think gusto nilang laging nasa limelight."

(They think they can win easily because of their names. And they also want to be in the limelight.)

But in 2007, CMFR had seen a decline in celebrity candidates.

The increase in numbers in the 2010 race may be a response to the public’s frustration, Teodoro added.

“The reason why celebrity candidates get elected is because of the frustration of the people. May mga nahalal nang abogado, mga may pinag-aralan pero ganun din naman, eh di dito na lang ako sa kilala ko, pareho-pareho lang naman," Teodoro said.

(Even though those who get elected may be lawyers and are educated, things stay the same. So people think, I’d rather vote for someone I know. Things will turn out the same after all.)

The most prominent celebrity in the elections is, of course, former matinee idol and former president Joseph Estrada.

Last year, he made a showbiz comeback in a comedy film.

Among those vying for the country’s number two post are three celebrities: actor Edu Manzano and broadcasters Loren Legarda and Jay Sonza.

But most of the celebrities have chosen to try out the local race: 86 of the 109 are gearing to be district representatives, governors, vice-governor, provincial board member, mayors, vice mayor & councilor.

Four out of ten are running for city or municipal councilors.

“Itong mga tumatakbo as councilor, may balak ‘yang mga yan. Kasi mas madaling manalo sa local, they want to accumulate a track record," Teodoro says.

(Celebrities running as councilors have higher political ambitions. It’s also easier to win at the local level and allow them to accumulate a track record.)

Actor Herbert "Bistek" Bautista is among those who worked his way up the political ladder.

Bautista was Quezon City councilor from 1992 to 1995. He was elected QC vice mayor from 1995 to 1998, but lost his first mayoralty bid in the 1998 elections.

Then Bautista reclaimed the vice mayoralty post in 2001, serving an unbroken three terms. He is now running as city mayor.

Tito Varela, former basketball referee, is now seeking a congressional seat. He was a councilor from 1998 to 2001, then served three terms as vice mayor.

For this elections, 11 celebrities — most of them having started as councilors — are seeking higher posts.

But there were former celebrity councilors who had also earlier tried to move up but failed. They are now trying to start over again by regaining their former seats.

Actor Robert Ortega ended three terms serving as councilor of Manila in 2007.

He then ran for vice mayor and lost to fellow actor Isko Moreno. Ortega is now running again as councilor of Manila’s 5th district.

Actor Lou Veloso ran for Congress in 2004 after two terms as Manila councilor.

He lost his congressional bid and returned as councilor in 2007. Veloso is seeking reelection as councilor of 6th district of Manila.

While others have ran, won, lost and returned into the political fray, some are just starting out.

At least 28 celebrities are newcomers in the political arena with most of them running as councilors.

Some rookie celebrity candidates are fielded to fill in the position vacated by a relative.

Former teen actress Precious Hipolito, running as QC 2nd District Councilor, is wife of end-term councilor Winston Castelo. Winston is now a candidate for QC 2nd legislative district.

Actor Gian Sotto, son of actors Helen Gamboa and Tito Sotto, is seeking to replace sister Diorella as QC 3rd District Councilor who is on her last term.

Girlie Ejercito, known in showbiz as Maita Sanchez and wife of actor ER Ejercito, is running as Pagsanjan mayor. ER is the outgoing mayor of Pagsanjan who is now aiming for the Laguna gubernatorial seat.

Former actress Guia Gomez is running as San Juan mayor, a seat to be vacated by son JV.

Commercial model Rachel Marguerite “Cutie" del Mar filed is seeking to replace her father as representative of Cebu City’s first congressional district.

Some celebrity candidates came to stay in politics, even building their own “celebrity political dynasties."

Former president Estrada’s son Jinggoy Estrada, also an actor, has served as San Juan vice mayor and mayor before he became senator in 2004. He is now running for reelection.

Bong Revilla, now running for reelection as senator, followed the footsteps of his father, former senator Ramon Revilla Sr. Bong’s wife, actress Lani Mercado, is now running as district representative of Cavite.

Former senator Sonny Jaworski, basketball legend, is son in law of Ramon Revilla. His son, Dodot Jaworski, served as Pasig representative for one term (2004-2007).

Reelectionist senator Lito Lapid was a three-term governor of Pampanga before he first ran for the Senate in 2004. His son, Mark, took over the gubernatorial seat in 2004. Mark lost his reelection bid to Father Ed Panlilio.

Another son, Maynard, is a party-list nominee.

Former two-term senator Tito Sotto is seeking a comeback to the Senate. His daughter, Lala Sotto, is on her last term as QC councilor. Tito’s son Gian is running for the post to be vacated by his sister.

Since the rise of the celebrity stars in politics with the election of an actor as President, celebrities for a long time banked on their popularity and name recall.

But in a 2007 study, IPD noted the marked decline of celebrity winners in the elections.

The “popular" advantage did not work for some stars who have been losing their bids for elective posts. Three of them are on their third attempt to win a seat in government.

Jay Sonza & Richard Gomez have tried their luck in both national and local races but have yet to win.

Cesar Montano lost his bid in 2007 senatorial race, but now he seeks the governorship of Bohol.

Manny Pacquiao is now running as Sarangani representative after his knockout loss to Darlene Custodio for the 1st Congressional district of South Cotabato in 2007.

It seems popularity alone is no longer enough to be elected.

In the 2004 and 2007 national race for example, of the celebrity candidates only those who previously held elective posts won.

These include Bong Revilla, Jinggoy Estrada, Lito Lapid, Loren Legarda and Noli de Castro.

“Name recognition is not enough, somehow you need to prove your ability to serve," Teodoro said.

Probably coming to the same conclusion, some incumbent celebrities took up short courses on management from the National College of Public Administration and Governance.

Councilor Aiko Melendez, now running as QC Vice mayor, and reelectionist councilor Marjorie Barreto, took up basic courses on local legislation.

Reelectionist vice mayor Isko Moreno took up a Development Legislation Enhancement course.

Reelectionist Batangas governor Vilma Santos graduated from a short course on local governance.

The May 10 polls would be the judge whether the stars of celebrity candidates continue to shine in politics. - GMA News Research

Gabriel supports Bautista-Belmonte tandem

Gabriela endorses Quezon City's Bautista-Belmonte tandem
By Jess Diaz and Michael Punongbayan  (The Philippine Star) Updated April 22, 2010

MANILA, Philippines - The militant party-list group Gabriela announced yesterday that it is supporting the Liberal Party ticket of Vice Mayor Herbert ‘Bistek’ Bautista, who is running for mayor, and her vice mayoral teammate, Joy Belmonte.
In a statement, Gabriela said it is supporting candidates “who are staunch advocates of, and consistent in advancing women’s rights and welfare, the fight on violence against women, and equal opportunity for work.”
“Herbert ‘Bistek’ Bautista and Joy Belmonte have shown that they are one with the women in these aspirations,” it said.
The group cited the vice mayor for promoting “equal opportunity for work and improvement for women, including alternative livelihood resources and employment opportunities, not to mention his support in the fight against violence against women.”
In Belmonte’s case, Gabriela said her “record shows her vigorous efforts in delivering projects that aim to empower the women and the youth.“Without even being a public official of Quezon City, through her various organizations, Ms. Belmonte launched several programs and projects that benefit women, youth and children in Quezon City,” it said. “Notable are her programs on barangay trainings on child protection and her spearheading the citywide celebration of March 8 Women’s Day to promote women’s rights,” the estatement said.
“It is with great hope that the women not only of Gabriela Women’s Party but the women and children of Quezon City expect Bistek Bautista and Joy Belmonte to uphold, promote and defend women’s rights and welfare when they serve as mayor and vice mayor of Quezon City,” the group added.
Belmonte is the daughter of Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., who is seeking congressional comeback as representative of his city’s fourth district.
Gabriela is one of the biggest party-list organizations. Based on a recent survey, it is expected to win the maximum three seats allowed a party-list group in the House of Representatives.
“Herbert ‘Bistek’ Bautista and Joy Belmonte have shown that they are one with the women in these aspirations,” Gabriela declared as it denied reports that they are endorsing the candidacies of Mike Defensor and Aiko Melendez who are also running for mayor and vice mayor respectively.
“We immediately denied this baseless report. None of our national officers ever talked with Mr. Defensor or Ms. Melendez or anyone from their camp,” the group said.

Liza Maza denying support for Mike and Aiko

Statement of Makabayan-Nacionalista senatorial candidate Liza Maza denying support for Mike Defensor and Aiko Melendez

In my capacity as Chair of Gabriela and Representative of Gabriela Women's Party, I categorically deny reports claiming support for former presidential Chief-of-Staff Mike Defensor and Aiko Melendez's candidacy for Quezon City's mayoralty and vice-mayoralty posts, respectively.
Gabriela and Gabriela Women's Party have been working for years now with individuals, groups and organizations, including the Office of Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista and Ms Joy Belmonte, for the promotion of the rights and improvement of the lives of women, including conducting seminars on Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act and livelihood trainings, but never with Mr Defensor and/or Ms Melendez.
I therefore declare the newspaper reports as untrue and not coming from Gabriela or Gabriela Women's Party. ###

We are not supporting Mike Defensor: Gabriela

GABRIELA National Alliance of Women and Gabriela Women’s Party yesterday clarified that they are not supporting Quezon City mayoral candidate Mike Defensor as reported by tabloid newspapers Remate, Unang Tiktik and Hataw.

"No national officer of GABRIELA or Gabriela Women’s Party ever talked with Mr. Defensor or anyone from his camp. The news reports in the three aforementioned tabloid newspapers neither named their source except for one Ruby Barcelona, allegedly a resident of District 2 in Quezon City," the Gabriela press statement said. "We admonish as completely irresponsible whoever issued such a statement in an attempt to use the name of our organizations to bolster Defensor’s candidacy."

Gabriela is not for Defensor, says Maza

Commuter Express

Gabriela is not for Defensor, says Maza

GABRIELA partylist representative Liza Maza, an advocate of the welfare of Filipina women, strongly denied the alleged support of the women’s group to Quezon City mayoralty candidate Mike Defensor.
Their partylist do not support any candidate in Quezon City especially Defensor who is known to be 'close' to President Macapagal- Arroyo.“No, we are not supporting Mike Defensor in his mayoralty bid in QC. Our chapter there s n d process of talking to candidates re d women's agenda. After that process dun kami magdedecide cno ang susuportahan”, Maza said in a text message, who is running for senator.
Maza says that she feels bad because Gabriela is being used by Mike to gain popularity in the area.
The group is also planning what will be thier next move regarding this issue.
Defensor was involved in various controversies like the detention of Pinoy nurses in the United States in 2006, also known as the “Sentosa 27”, which was exposed by Sen. Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel; the “Padi's Point scandal” in 2001; and the multi-billion peso ZTE-NBN deal.
Last month, Defensor's camp also distributed a fake poll survey result in favor of him, which was immediately denied by survey firms SWS and Pulse Asia.

MIKE DEFENSOR DESPERADO

'Defensor desperado na' - Bistek
(Pilipino Star Ngayon)
April 08, 2010

Sumunod sina Defensor, 11%; Annie Rosa Susano, 6%; Ismael Mathay, 4%; Ariel Inton, 3%; at Samonte, 0%.

Quezon City is Already in Capable Hands

Quezon City is Already in Capable Hands
by BARRIO SIETE

I usually don’t write articles that deal with politics since it’s really not my field. I blog about technology and video games, but when I learned about a certain Paul Farol spreading lies about a survey for Quezon City’s mayoralty race, I think it’s about time to say my piece. And besides, this Paul Farol issued a threat on his blog which goes like this;
“We’ve already talked to a couple of friends and colleagues about it who have promised to help track down each and every person involved with Barrio Siete.
I contribute to Barrio Siete, so base on your threat Mr. Farol, you’ll track me down too? You sound like Tim Cumper. REALLY. I’m serious. CREEPY. It’s Good Friday. Time to clean up your soul Mr. Paul Farol and drench it with muriatic acid. Ok. Lysol na lang.
Paul Farol’s message to Reyna Elena even included this in his entry:
“I wonder if he’ll come home to the Philippines anytime soon. I hope he does so I can give him a warm welcome.”
Why would you threaten people? Aren’t you learning something from what you started Paul Farol? What if some people starts threatening you too? Any lessons learned from your demolition job to Reyna Elena and Barrio Siete? How it bounced back on you? I won’t be surprise if your threat bounces back again to you.
For the record, I don’t know who this Paul Farol is until he started issuing this threat. Heck, I don’t even know what issues he has with Reyna Elena until now. I asked around my blogger friends regarding who this guy is and surprise, surprise! He’s a Richard Gordon supporter!
FYI, I support Bayani Fernando (Quick! Get your Twibbons here) and is currently thinking between Gibo or Dick Gordon (but I’m about 99% sure it’s Gordon). Mr. Farol, you and your acts are such a disgrace to all Dick Gordon supporters. Seriously.
Anyway, about his lies. He recently blogged about a survey in Quezon City’s mayoralty post with Mike Defensor winning. Well here’s a fact: there has been no survey conducted in Quezon City for the past 2 months.
“We have never conducted a survey in Quezon City. We did not conduct a survey in that particular period, not in this election. Definitely, we deny having done that survey being quoted in the newspaper report,” Pulse Asia President Ronald Holmes in a phone interview. (Source: Pulse Asia denies survey for Quezon City mayor, vice bets)
As far as I know (and my sources at our Barangay), there has only been one survey conducted by SWS around January and Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista is leading with 75% over close rival Annie Rosa Susano who has 9%. Mike Defensor has only 6%, former Mayor Ismael Mathay with 5%, Antonio Inton with 3% and a poor Mr. Johnny Chang (who happens to be Rocky’s neighbor LOL) that didn’t even get a 1%.
Let me show this clearly:
  • Herbert Bautista 75%
  • Annie Rosa Susano 9%
  • Mike Defensor 6%
  • Ismael Mathay 5%
  • Antonio Inton 3%
Herbert Bautista’s running mate, Joy Belmonte, also leads the survey with 60%, Janet Malaya with 19% and Aiko Melendez with 17%. Inton has already withdrawn from the race FYI.
But surveys aside, I firmly believe that Quezon City is already in capable hands. Nothing much has change in Quezon City from 1986 to 2001. Mayor Jun Simon was mayor from 1986-1992 and Mayor Mel Mathay from 1992-2001. That’s 15 years and 2 mayors. But when Mayor Sonny Belmonte and Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista were elected 9 years ago, a lot has changed.
In just 3 years, you won’t even recognize most parts of Quezon City. 3 YEARS. THREE YEARS. For 6 more years, the tandem of Mayor Belmonte and Vice Mayor Bautista, popularly known as SB Team, transformed Quezon City as the most business friendly and richest city in the country. SB Team revitalized Quezon City and not even Mayor Jejomar Binay’s 24 year rule on Makati  comes close.
SB Team may not be perfect, but in just 9 years, we’ve seen change. Mr. Farol, have you ever paid your taxes in Quezon City hall? I mean, did you pay it by yourself? If yes, I guess you already know how everything changed since SB Team replaced Mayor Mel Mathay. Everything computerized, comfortable seats, and free coffee & Wi-Fi FTW!
I don’t doubt Mike Defensor’s capability, fact is, I even voted and campaigned for him last elections. We even tried to feature him on our website GameOPS (since he plays video games) to at least help him in his campaign. But my point is Mr. Farol, would you risk changing leaders this time? Everything right now is OK in Quezon City. Just look what happened to our country when Erap was elected, almost everything was fine with FVR then Erap came along.
Mr. Farol, did you also know that Mike Defensor once said in an interview;
“[Now] if you could find a single project he (Bautista) did, I will withdraw my candidacy,”

Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista has Sports Programs for the Youth (Annual Batang QC Olympics, Special Olympics for Differently-abled Children), Handog sa Barangay Programs (Health Care Services; Anti-Rabies Vaccinations; Free Wheelchairs, canes, and cutches; Fumigations; Livelihood programs; etc.), Environmental programs; Anti-Drug campaigns;  and a lot more.
Herbert Bautista has served Quezon City as a councilor from 1992-1995 and Vice Mayor from 1995-1998 and from 2001-2010. I find it impossible that for 15 years, he has done nothing. He was even the National Youth Commission chair around 1999 if I recall correctly. Mayor Belmonte wouldn’t endorse his Vice Mayor if he didn’t trust him. Right? As for those corruption charges, WHY ONLY NOW?
Each city has its own set of distinct problems and I believe SB Team has already done what they can on Quezon City. I want it to stay that way. It’s now up to the national government and each and everyone of us to solve the other problems.
One person can’t do it alone, so I suggest you start with yourself Mr. Farol. Repent! Say 5 Hail Reyna Elena! Peel your monkey suit and get a decent job! Kaya let’s all be good citizens and follow our laws.
Now, before anyone of you ask, I’m not a paid hack of Bautista and Belmonte. I am a legal, law-abiding, tax-paying Quezon City wage-earning resident who never bullied anybody (pwera si Mark) that cannot be deported anywhere. Subukan mo lang na ipa-deport ako! I’ve lived my entire life here; I’ve seen the city’s up and down, and frankly, I have every right to say what I feel is right and for the betterment of this city. I believe that Quezon City is already in very capable hands under Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte.
